Reserves took to the field against Gotham City F.C. on Sunday looking to advance to the next round of the Harry Saunders Cup. There was a major hole in the roster this week as goalkeeper Mamadou Thioune was unavailable. He was replaced by Nicholas Nebot. Goalkeeping isn't easy and after falling behind 1-0 quickly on a shot that should have been saved, it was clear that there was a lot of work to be done.
Reserves started to gain ground slowly, but was dealt another blow as Gotham found the net a second time. Once again the players were forced to pick up the pieces and find a way to come back. Reserves earned a penalty just before halftime and converted it to make the score 2-1. The feeling around the ground was that the momentum had shifted to Beyond’s favor as goalkeeper Mamadou Thioune became available.
All seemed to be going Beyond’s way up until five minutes into the second half. Beyond lost Mamadou after he took a blow to the face and left the game. Now with a second makeshift goalkeeper, Veprim Gashi, reserves had to do their best to keep Gotham at bay. Unfortunately they had the tempo and possession, but ultimately conceded two more goals before the full time whistle.
Despite the loss, midfielder Obi Aquino feels there is still a silver lining to the team. “There are a few new players who are still finding their role in the team, this was noticeable once again this past Sunday...All in all we see that there's still potential that needs to be tapped into and we left with our heads high and looking forward to defend our unbeaten streak this coming Sunday.”
On a side note, Beyond F.C. will be saying goodbye to a teammate and friend as Julien Motte will be returning home to France. “What I'm going to miss the most is the people. I made great friends during this season with beyond FC and I am going to miss everybody.” Julien noted. From all of us here at Beyond F.C., we wish Julien the best and hope to see him again soon!
Reserves will return to action in the CSL this Sunday against Doxa F.C. At 6:30pm. They will look to keep this year’s unbeaten streak alive.
